As a therapist, I specialize in working extensively with individuals who struggle with perfectionism. In my experience, I often interpret narratives of not feeling good enough as a manifestation of perfectionism, stemming from a profound fear of making mistakes that is deeply rooted in feelings of shame.

Perfectionism, in my view, manifests as setting excessively high and unyielding standards for oneself, coupled with an overwhelming tendency towards over-analysis. This combination frequently leads to burnout, feelings of inadequacy, and disengagement from one's own life.

To delve deeper, it is crucial to understand that a more adaptive form of perfectionism may be suitable in certain contexts, such as meticulous tax preparation or executing job-related tasks with precision. However, when this mindset infiltrates interpersonal relationships, both with others and oneself, it often results in emotional distancing and relational challenges.

From the perspective of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I emphasize that avoidance and control strategies serve as the primary catalysts for psychological distress. By resorting to these mechanisms, individuals inadvertently transform normal, inevitable discomfort into a self-perpetuating cycle of feeling trapped and enduring unnecessary suffering. This underscores the underlying purpose of control and avoidance tactics: an attempt to evade or diminish pain, rather than addressing it directly.

Within the framework of our therapy sessions, we will embark on a journey to uncover the origins of the unhealthy coping mechanisms that currently impact your daily life. Through this exploration, you will gain invaluable insights into your thought patterns and behaviors, fostering a greater sense of self-awareness.

Moreover, you will acquire mindfulness techniques that empower you to recognize and consciously engage in adaptive behaviors, steering away from defaulting to perfectionism as a coping mechanism. By cultivating mindfulness and intentional actions, you will gradually shift towards a more balanced and fulfilling way of navigating life's challenges.
