Expressive Arts is better explained as utilizing symbols, designs, or music to express feelings and emotions in a creative space. The process of incorporating art adds another dimension to therapy, allowing you to experience your concerns in the moment, rather than just talk about them intellectually. There's more to art than just the finished painting too--there's also the interpreting process. Consider the following questions as you wonder if an artistic approach to therapy is for you:

  • What is it like for me to put pen to paper together?

  • Do I worry about doing it wrong, or am I afraid of being judged?

  • Do I like what I see?

Your therapist doesn't have to be an artist either. The goal is not to create a masterpiece. In fact the goal is free-association between thoughts, events and emotions.
